• "LMTO Calculations". For a few years I worked as a physicist in the field of computational material science. I designed and implemented a package of programs for calculation of response functions to electromagnetic radiation for some semiconductor materials. The calculations were quite complicated conceptually and rather intensive from computational point of view. They involved: (1) self-consistent, fully relativistic calculation of electronic structure (2) calculation of the dipole transition matrix elements (3) calculation of the joint density of states, the imaginary part of the dielectric function and optical absorption in the energy range from infrared to hard X-ray. May calculations supported the experimental work carried out by a group of physicists in Krakow (Poland) and Rome (Italy). The software is used in several European laboratories. The complete package of programs carrying out the calculation of the optical properties of materials has been implemented and used on several platforms, including vector machines (Convex), symmetric multiprocessors (Sun 670 MP) and also on Novell network for small structures. My Ph.D. thesis "The Analysis of Applicability of One-particle Approximation to the Theoretical Description of Optical Properties of Semiconductors" described the results of those calculations.
• "CAREWEB" (http://www.npac.syr.edu/projects/careweb/) is a Web based health care community system, targeted on the school nursing domain. It includes support for heterogeneous distributed patient record database and collaboratory tools for interactive consultation involving nurses, nurse practitioners and pediatricians. CareWeb, a pioneering project to develop new technology that could provide access to health care for schoolchildren, debuted May 6 1996 during a telemedicine conference at OnCenter (Syracuse, NY) cosponsored by the SUNY Health Science Center and NYNEX. A partnership between Syracuse University, the Syracuse City School District and SUNY Health Science Center led to building the first-known computerized system design for public school nurses. CareWeb developed by the team including Roman Markowski was demonstrated at the HealthInfo Conference in Washington DC and attracted considerable interest in the health community. The goal of the CareWeb project which is in the second round of prototyping activities is to develop and deploy better health care system in all (~60) schools in the Syracuse City School District, and thereby become a better healthcare provider based on coordinating functions of the planned Nursing Community Center. Web technologies used and/or developed in the CareWeb system are naturally scalable to larger communities and portable/adaptable to other healthcare domains including telemedicine projects for US Army
• "COLLABORATORY AND TELECOMMUNICATION EXPERIMENTS" sponsored by USAF Rome Laboratory, $200.000, 1994 - 1995, supervised by Roman Markowski. The project concentrated on the design and implementation of "Telepathology workstation" based on ATM/ISDN network connectivity, collaboratory technology and Oracle database access. The project, supported by Rome Laboratory, focused on developing and demonstrating telemedicine applications in cooperation with neuropatologists from the SUNY Health Science Center (HSC). This effort included investigation of the appropriate collaboration technology required to support joint decision making involving physically dispersed information and user locations. It prototyped the technology for multimedia service in the area of collaboration. The telemedicine experiment involved the demonstration of capabilities over ATM high speed network to enable neuropathologists to conduct remote, collaborative diagnoses. Telemedicine advanced technologies can transmit very accurate microscope images that will help doctors detect a problem earlier and increase the chances of their patients' survival.
• "NYNET" is an experimental broadband communications network constructed in New York State, under the sponsorship of NYNEX. Using fiber optics and emerging Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switching technology, the NYNet network provides a perfect testbed for the National Information Infrastructure (or Information Superhighway) and a phenomenal opportunity for business. The National Information Infrastructure is considered a critical asset for the economic future of this country. Industry and governmental programs have made significant progress in establishing the feasibility and in developing the network technology. ATM is an emerging broadband switching technology being adopted by the computer and communications industry and will equally support the transfer of voice, data and video. Operating at rates as high as 2.4 gigabits per second, NYNet will permit development of a broad range of applications in industries such as health care, education, and finance. Future focus will be on new applications that will transform the way people work, learn and receive social services. Roman Markowski has been involved in design and implementation of ATM technologies in the NYNET project since the very beginning of its existence. He takes active role in implementation of ATM network connecting Syracuse University with Cornell University, Rome Laboratory, Museum of Science and Technology, Rome Free Academy, Fowler High School, Whitesboro Middle School and SU School of Education.
• "VISIBLE HUMAN PROJECT" (http://www.npac.syr.edu/projects/3Dvisiblehuman/3dvisiblehuman.html) . The National Library of Medicine has taken to provide a set of digitized images of the human body for use in education, research and medical applications. The Visible Human is a set of digital images of the body such as transverse CT, MRI and cryosection images of representative male and female cadavers at one millimeter intervals. The Northeast Parallel Architecture Center(NPAC) at Syracuse University has obtained a copy of the Visible Human data set and is working on processing the raw data to produce two and three dimensional images that can be accessed over the Internet for educational purposes. Intended uses and applications of the 2D/3D images include teaching and modeling applications (such as virtual surgery), most of these uses require the segmentation and classification of the volume data into anatomical objects. Teaching applications range from identifying anatomical structures on the cross sections to visualizing full motion of the human form. Our very near term aim is to get a very crude reconstruction of various body parts and use it as visual/navigational icons for CareWeb and other patient record pages/dirs/spaces. After getting more 3D material, we are planning to develop educational pages. A long term aim is to accomplish a realtime support for minimal invasive surgery, such as a natural 'wet surgery' interface to endoscopic instruments in which surgeon's gestures are translated into the actual coordinates of the minimal invasive surgery instruments (cameras, scissors, scalpels) and the 3D human data acts as a lookup table to generate the mapping.
• "EXPERT NETWORK MANAGEMENT SYSTEM". This project aims at designing and developing a prototype of an intelligent network management system based on NetView using Expert system technology. Most current expert systems use production rules and/or frames for knowledge representations. Case-based reasoning(CBR), which uses analogical reasoning methods is particularly applicable to solving problems in large systems, problems such as arise in traffic congestion in large distributed network systems. The advantage of this approach is the ability to use the large-grained knowledge representation of "cases"- the previously used solutions- rather than finer-grained rules, hence potentially enhancing the real-time performance of the systems. The main objectives are as follows: (1) Investigate methods for adding values to existing NetView network management system (2) Design and implement expert network management modules and interfaces for NetView
• "LIVING SCHOOL BOOK" (http://lsb.syr.edu/). Based on leading NII technologies, such as databases, digital video, the WWW, and advanced networking, the Living SchoolBook demonstrates Educational Information Infrastructure (or EII) services. Teacher and students are discovering ways in which state of the art information systems support development of pioneering educational resources within the culture of the classroom and the larger school community. Roman Markowski is involved directly in the design and implementation of the ATM-based network infrastructure for participating Schools.

• For many years I lived in Wieliczka, Poland, where my family roots are. The town is famous for having the oldest operational salt mine in Europe which has been working for over 700 years.
  This mine, a centuries old tourist attraction, cannot be compared to anything else in the world. The mine has been visited from its beginning by the famous and the mighty of this world. Kopernik, Goethe, Humboldt, Paderewski, Mendelejew, Baden Powell, Karol Wojtyla - who later became Pope John Paul II, ordinary people and crowned heads of state, all have visited this remarkable site.
  Since 1978, the mine is on UNESCO's list of World Class Landmarks of Cultural and Natural Heritage - where it was listed among the top twelve attractions in the world.
  The most popular attractions are the enormous excavation chambers, the tallest being 36 meters high, and two others reaching 30 meters each. The tour includes a visit to three chapels, the oldest more than 300 years old and youngest a mere 100 years old. They are richly decorated with salt sculptures.
  The largest of the chapels - dedicated to the Blessed Kinga - is located 101 meters below the surface, it is over 50 meters long, 15 meters wide, 12 meters high, and has the volume of 10,000 square meters. It is entirely made out of salt, richly furnished with sculptures, bas-reliefs, and large chandeliers made from salt crystals. The Chapel is the work of my great grandfather, Jozef Markowski, and his brother Tomasz (late 19th-early 20th cent.)
